Abstract Scope |
Ballistic armor for body protection are both military personnel and policemen essential items. Body armors have traditionally been made of a basic synthetic fiber (SF) such as the aramid fabric, like commercial Kevlar, or the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, like commercial Dynema. In recent decades, natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLFs) composites have increasingly been investigated as possible body armor materials owing to advantages such as cost-effectiveness, lightness and sustainable conditions. However, ballistic impact resistance of the aforementioned SFs still prevails as the most important requirement for body armor material. A hybrid combination of NLF/SF, specially as staked layers of fabric composites, is now sought as the future body armor material. This work presents an overview of current research on hybrid composites, combining NLF/SF used not only as body armor but also as helmet component. Publications related to this subject are analyzed and discussed in terms of advantages and eventual shortcomings. |
