Abstract Scope |
Transparent ceramics are well established alternatives to single crystals and glasses for a variety of applications such as transparent armor and laser gain media. Traditionally accepted design paradigms dictate that only optically isotropic (cubic) crystal structures with high are suitable for polycrystalline laser gain media. The restriction of symmetry is due to light scattering caused by randomly oriented anisotropic crystals and severely limits material choices. We will describe our ongoing efforts in processing transparent ceramics for laser gain media and electrooptic control. The key insights are tuning the material nano/microstructure using the flexibility offered by powder processing. We will discuss the effect of processing parameters such as heating rates, and pressures effect the microstructure and thus material performance. |
