The integrity and durability of pot lining in aluminum reduction cells are key factors influencing cathode longevity and operational stability. This publication outlines a structured methodology for selecting pots to restart based on detailed lining inspections and thorough evaluation of historical process indicators. Approach incorporates a comprehensive set of guidelines tailored to restart methodology covering crash start-up, electrical resistance preheating, and diesel-fired preheating. Methodology focuses on in-depth condition assessment using cathode surface mapping and in-situ measurements to determine wear profiles and estimate residual cathode life. This paper covers evaluation of metal infiltration, sidewall state, cathode surface condition, cooling cracks, and hollow cathodes, with clear established Kitimat AP40 acceptance criteria. Integrating operational history, inspection findings, lifespan projections, and sensitivity analysis shall facilitate apt restart methodology decision. Entailed comprehensive approach minimizes the risk of early failure while ensuring safe and stable pot operation following restart. |
