| Abstract Scope |
Copper and copper alloys are promising materials for antimicrobial applications on high-touch surfaces due to their broad-spectrum activity against bacteria and viruses. Cold spray offers a scalable process for depositing copper coatings with refined, defect-rich microstructures that can promote ion release and enhance microbial inactivation. However, real life implementation requires that the antimicrobial performance be retained after repeated cleaning, abrasion and chemical exposure.
In this work, cold-sprayed copper-based coatings are evaluated for antimicrobial efficacy, before and after accelerated aging, following a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocol involving abrasion cycles followed by chemical exposure. The surface and microstructural changes induced by aging are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, laser profilometry, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction and contact angle measurements. Antimicrobial performance is assessed against selected viral and bacterial strains and correlated with surface and microstructural evolution. The findings provide insights on the durability and long-term antimicrobial performance of cold-sprayed copper. |
