| Abstract Scope |
The ISASMELT™ technology is the benchmark for low fugitive emissions in the base metals smelting industry. Although early installations faced more limited regulatory or community pressure on fugitive emission control, the technology’s inherent advantages in prevention and containment have now become apparent. Subsequent installations of the ISASMELT™ furnace, in more urban and environmentally sensitive contexts, leveraged the technology’s potential to implement effective fugitive emissions controls. This suite of controls includes multiple layers of engineered mitigation strategies, now proven in commercial operations. These mitigation approaches have recently enabled the ISASMELT™ technology to achieve the lowest measured fugitive emissions in copper smelter surveys. The paper will review the initial deployment context, discuss ISASMELT™ design features that inherently support emissions control and highlight the development pathway. The findings demonstrate that, with appropriate engineering and operational controls in place, the ISASMELT™ technology can achieve the lowest levels of fugitive emissions in the industry. |
