Abstract Scope |
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has implemented a project to avoid fumes emissions in potrooms due to failures of exhaust fan dampers. In potrooms, fumes are generated during the aluminium electrolysis process and they are collected for cleaning in Gas Treatment Centers (GTCs). A failure of GTC main exhaust fans can lead to significant environmental pollution and interruption of critical gas scrubbing. Failures occurred when the outlet damper positions were disturbed suddenly, which was not controlled easily. To avoid damper failures, several improvements were introduced. In this project, damper fail-safe mode was added, a verification of high inlet/outlet duct pressure was introduced before initiating closing command, and manual option of damper control was created for the operators. Upon successful completion of this project, uncontrolled closing of the dampers of the main exhaust fans was eliminated, which ensured reliable operation and fume treatment. |
