Recent advances in TEM image analysis, combined with rate-theory modeling, enable improved interpretation of extended defect evolution in irradiated materials. Using nuclear fuel materials, we demonstrate how this can be used to characterize dislocation loop behavior and quantify loop growth, unfaulting, migration, and coalescence. However, quantitative analysis of the defect physics across scales needs to recognize limitations in both experimental measurements and modeling. Experimental limitations arise from TEM’s visibility criteria, which restrict detection of small or unfavorably oriented defects and bias measured densities and sizes. Additionally, TEM lamellae surface alters point defect concentrations and introduces image forces on dislocation loops impacting interaction kinetics and complicating quantitative interpretation. To address these challenges, visibility corrections are applied to expanded rate-theory modeling to account for visibility criteria and thin-foil effects. This integrated framework refines quantitative interpretation of irradiation-induced defects and strengthens the linkage between TEM observations and predictive models of nuclear materials behavior. |
