| Abstract Scope |
Dissimilar metal joining is governed by fundamental interface incompatibilities including intermetallic compound (IMC) formation, thermal expansion mismatch, and galvanic corrosion. Interlayer materials address these challenges, yet selection is predominantly guided by prior experimental knowledge rather than systematic quantitative criteria. This work presents a multi-criteria interlayer selection framework integrating the Miedema semi-empirical model and corrosion thermodynamics. A two-step procedure evaluates interlayer C against base metals A and B. Step I screens thermodynamic suitability through formation enthalpy and Gibbs free energy comparisons between interlayer-side IMCs and the direct baseline. Step II evaluates corrosion resistance through oxide film integrity and electrochemical driving force. Hardness, thermal expansion, melting point, and IMC thickness are reported as informational outputs. Framework validity is demonstrated through laser welding of CP-titanium and Al5083. Direct joining without interlayer achieved 103 ± 25 MPa. A Ni powder interlayer, selected by the framework, delivered measurable joint strength improvement, confirming its predictive capability. |
