| Abstract Scope |
Thermal conductivity of magnesium alloys in the molten state has an impact on the quality of the end-product. The reactivity of these alloys lowers the upper temperature, narrowing the casting window. These issues are compounded by the addition of rare-earth elements of alloys such as WE43 and EV31. Computational modeling addresses these issues by simulation of mold filling, solidification pathways, and defect formation. The thermal management along with gate and riser designs are optimized to reduce porosity and defect formation. These models are improved with properties measured in the molten state, accounting for variations in the composition. Specialized sample holders used in a laser flash analyzer (LFA) and dilatometer allow measurements of these alloys from solid state, through the solid-liquid state, and to a completely molten state. Test results for the magnesium alloys in the molten state will be presented in conjunction with casting simulations utilizing these thermal physical properties. |
