Abstract: Highiron bauxite is increasingly used as an alternative alumina resource. However, its complex AlFe intergrowth causes low Al dissolution, large red mud discharge, and Fe loss in the Bayer process. Various methods have been explored for FeAl separation, including physical beneficiation, chemical (acid/alkaline leaching, reduction roasting–magnetic separation), and bioleaching. Reduction roasting–magnetic separation effectively recovers iron, while combined processes achieve both Al and Fe recovery. Recently, biomassassisted reduction and calcification–biomass coupling have emerged as cleaner routes to convert hematite to magnetite under mild conditions while enabling alumina extraction. This review summarizes the principles, advantages, and limitations of these technologies, and outlines prospects for sustainable and full utilization of highiron bauxite. |
