| Abstract Scope |
Microalloying strategies have been proposed to promote grain refinement in Cu-based laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) components by enabling particle-assisted heterogeneous nucleation during solidification. However, predictive criteria for identifying alloying additions that can both survive melt pool conditions and refine the grain structure of the material remain limited. In this work, a thermodynamic framework is developed to evaluate particle dissolution behavior in Cu-based systems as a function of composition and temperature across LPBF-relevant conditions to assess thermodynamic favorability and dissolution kinetics. The standard Gibbs free energy of dissolution and Henrian activity coefficient are identified as the dominant thermodynamic parameters across the evaluated systems, controlling whether complete, partial, or temperature-dependent dissolution occurs. As such, this framework provides a foundation for screening microalloying candidates by partial dissolution feasibility in Cu-based LPBF systems. |
