| Abstract Scope |
Friction stir welding (FSW) of 6xxx series aluminum alloys leads to strength reduction in the weld zone due to precipitate dissolution and coarsening. This study investigates the effect of post-weld T6 heat treatment on hardness and tensile behavior of three different 6xxx alloy pairs welded in the T4 condition under identical processing parameters. After welding, a T6 cycle consisting of solution treatment at 520°C for 3h and artificial aging at 180°C for 5.5 h was applied. Mechanical properties were evaluated by Brinell hardness and tensile testing. A systematic comparison under identical conditions revealed that post-weld T6 treatment significantly improves strength recovery across all alloy pairs. The best-performing alloy pair exhibited ~32% increase in hardness, 36% in yield strength, and 38% in tensile strength. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of post-weld T6 treatment in restoring FSW-induced strength loss and highlight compositional sensitivity in 6xxx alloys. |
