| Abstract Scope |
Focused energy sources such as laser beams have become commonplace for manufacturing processes involving melting or solidification phenomena. The fast laser motion and sub-100 micrometer intensity focus causes steep temperature gradients at the liquid-solid interface and interface velocities on the order of meters per second. Using the widely examined Ag-Cu model system, predictions of cellular, dendritic, and plain-front growth morphologies are compared with laser surface glazing experiments. The laser experiments yield single track melt-pools that are imaged in cross-sections and at the TEM-level in cellular growth directions. The predictions are based mainly on the models developed by Kurz, Giovanola, and Trivedi for transitions between constrained growth morphologies. Variations in material data input for the models are critically examined and when averaged yield agreement with experimental observations. The concept of absolute stability is discussed in the context of the experience with Ag-Cu and more generally of past and current literature findings. |
