| Abstract Scope |
Titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steels are often used as thin-walled tubes in corrosive and high-temperature environments. The size and density of TiN inclusions are known to vary with slab thickness. Large TiN inclusions can lead to the formation of silver-type defects during mechanical working, thereby affecting product performance. In this study, the dissolution and reprecipitation behavior of TiN inclusions was investigated using a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy. Samples were extracted from the one-quarter thickness (t/4) location of a continuously cast slab (1200 × 1200 × 200 mm³). The cooling rate was estimated using a heat-transfer model, while liquidus and solidus temperatures were determined using FactSage. The results show that pre-existing TiN inclusions begin to dissolve at ~1500 °C during heating and reprecipitate during cooling. The mechanism of formation of large-size TiN inclusions is explored by studying the agglomeration behavior in the mushy zone and ripening behavior in the solidified steel. |
