| Abstract Scope |
Development of a novel metastable β titanium alloy has been undertaken in response to the interest in production of Ti alloy components that exhibit uniform microstructures with high strength, a yield strength greater than that of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and reasonable ductility. The novel Ti-6Al-4V-3Fe alloy has been developed and processed utilizing hot isostatic pressing with the aim of producing a reasonably small and uniform grain size with a fine distribution of the alpha phase. The HIP cycle process utilized was chosen based on CALPHAD predictions and the refined dispersion of the alpha phase has resulted in an extremely enhanced yield stress coupled with limited ductility. The results of a study of deformation mechanisms and the causes of the limited ductility will be presented. |
