This study examined three extruded LAZ-series Mg alloys with different Al contents: LZ91, LAZ911, and LAZ931, aiming to investigate the relationship between corrosion behavior and microstructure. Microstructure characterizations revealed nanosized MgLi2(Al,Zn) precipitates in all three alloys, whereas coarse secondary phase particles were present only in LAZ931. Corrosion immersion tests showed that LZ91 and LAZ931 experienced localized corrosion; conversely, LAZ911 remained immune to localized attack during the 24-hour immersion. Cross-sectional SEM/FIB observations reveal that the localized corrosion in LAZ931 was triggered by the microgalvanic effect between the coarse secondary phase particles and the β-matrix. Meanwhile, cross-sectional TEM and XPS analysis of the LAZ911 surface corrosion film demonstrates the formation of a protective film containing aluminum oxides or hydroxides. These findings indicate that an optimal Al addition enhances the surface corrosion film protectiveness and alloy corrosion resistance, whereas excessive Al addition leads to coarse secondary phase particles and severe localized corrosion. |
