| Abstract Scope |
The decarbonization of iron and steelmaking—amid growing global disruptions in raw material supply chains—demands innovative and sustainable approaches. This presentation introduces a series of novel manufacturing frameworks designed to address these challenges. These include: (i) hydrogen plasma reduction of hematite powders, and (ii) the utilization of red mud, an iron-rich byproduct of alumina production, as a sustainable fluxing agent for both primary ironmaking and secondary refining, and (iii) direct ore-to-part demonstration using 3D printing and sintering of ore derived oxides into stainless steel. Multi-scale characterization and thermodynamic modeling results will be presented to elucidate the phase transformation pathways and key challenges involved with these processes. Together, these approaches present a promising pathway toward a circular, low-carbon iron and steel manufacturing paradigm. |
