Slag foaming in steelmaking is caused by CO bubbles generated through the reaction between FeO in slag and carbon in hot metal. Previous X-ray transmission studies demonstrated that fine bubbles play an important role in foam formation. However, owing to the limited spatial and temporal resolution of conventional observation techniques, the behavior of individual bubbles smaller than 1 mm immediately after their formation at the slag-metal reaction interface has not been directly resolved. In the present study, fine CO bubbles generated at a FeO-containing slag/carbon-saturated iron interface were directly observed using a high-speed camera synchronized with laser illumination. This technique realized in-situ observation of individual submillimeter bubbles and allowed their growth histories to be tracked separately, which has rarely been achieved in previous studies. It is found out that several tens of micrometers of bubbles are generated in the vicinity of reaction interface, the bubble size increased rapidly immediately after their first appearance and subsequently remained nearly constant until coalescence occurred. |
