Relaxation processes in metallic glasses govern e.g., changes of viscosity or enthalpy at and across the glass transition, yet their structural origin and the relationship between different relaxation modes remain unclear. In particular, the role of “slow” β-relaxations and their connection to medium-range order (MRO) and deformation is under debate. In this study, bulk metallic model glasses were investigated using a systematic thermal protocol and calorimetric measurements to characterize the macroscopic relaxation behavior. Samples in distinct relaxational states were further analyzed by fluctuation electron microscopy and electron correlation microscopy to microscopically probe MRO and local nanoscale dynamics. Calorimetric and spatially resolved data are discussed concerning the evolution of MRO during relaxation and the distinction and possible coupling between different relaxation modes, thereby addressing structural mechanisms involved in the relaxation of metallic glasses. |
