| Abstract Scope |
Al-10Si coatings are used throughout the automotive industry to protect press-hardened steels from surface oxidation, decarburization, and corrosion. Neither the microstructure nor the diffusion profile is fully understood yet, with the interface itself open to interpretation regarding the formation of preferential intermetallics. This work looked at the effectiveness of a CALPHAD-based method to map the diffusion profile of an Al-10Si coating on 22MnB5 steel during the austenitization profile. Various function-based compositional and heating profiles were tested to gauge the impact that both variables would have upon the coating/substrate interface. The results acquired will be compared to literature studies of the interface, providing the groundwork for future development into more complex coatings.
