| Abstract Scope |
Dual-phase steels are extensively used in automotive body-in-white components, because of their excellent combination of strength, formability, and easy processing route. In automotive industry, resistance spot welding is mainly employed in joining these steels because of its fast and reliable process. However, the rapid heating/cooling during welding, produces fully martensitic fusion-zone microstructure and softened heat-affected zone, making post-weld treatment necessary. In this study, an in-situ post weld heat treatment is employed in the form of double pulse resistance spot welding. This enabled greater control in nugget formation and helped in tailoring the HAZ microstructure close to the base metal microstructure. Further in this work, a two-dimensional axisymmetric COMSOL model was developed to predict nugget diameter, solidus/liquidus regions, HAZ/softened zones, and thermal histories for the weld schedules. This model also predicts phase fractions, and corresponding nanohardness variation across the weldment, providing a systematic tool for optimizing Dual-phase steel resistance spot welds. |
