| Abstract Scope |
SiC and SiC/SiC composites are candidate materials for in-core components in advanced fusion and fission power stations, including TRISO fuel particles, structural composites, and as functional devices.
Radiation defects in SiC include homonuclear C-C and Si-Si bonding creating chemical defects in addition to crystallographic defects. Post-irradiation annealing while acquiring Raman spectra has been used to determine temperatures for defect recovery finding C-C peaks reduce at a lower temperature and contribute to Si-C peak recovery prior to reduction of Si-Si signals. This indicates higher carbon mobility driving defect recovery, although Si-Si defects remain. This can have implications for operating temperatures, corrosion response, and diffusion in SiC components.
High temperature residual stress measurements have been made on SiC fibres and matrix in nuclear-grade composites, finding a reduction in relative stresses with increasing temperature. This is related to changes in mechanical properties based on high temperature fibre push-out testing. |
