| Abstract Scope |
Electron beam welding shows potential time savings for fabrication of heavy section components. Successful demonstrations have been completed by industry on 200 mm thick cylindrical low alloy steel materials. Significant research has shown the technology is ready for deployment, but we need to address a few remaining topics to fully realize the potential of EB welding. This presentation will cover work on transferring weld parameters between machines and options for repair of potential defects. The transfer of weld parameters between low kV and high kV equipment was performed for both steady state condition and the slope out region of circumferential welds with SA-508 Grade 3 and Grade 4N low alloy steels. Different oscillation strategies were required for high kV and low kV equipment. Evaluation of repair methods was performed by metallography and mechanical property testing for both arc welding and electron beam welding repairs. |
