Abstract Scope Ceramic innovations — spanning phase-transformation engineering to environmental robustness — are already integrated into key technologies deployed across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Future demands for higher performance at lower cost position ceramics as a compelling material class for these settings. Target applications — including advanced filtration, emergency desalination, and novel cooling — each depend on tailored microstructures and phase transformations but remain limited in LMIC settings. For example, the potential to use conductive oxides for robust electro-oxidation in water sanitation remains hampered by cost, precise phase/defect control during processing, and simple brittle failure under rugged in situ conditions. This talk reviews current applications and performance needs, illustrating where fundamental phase-transformation and materials design could translate ceramic science into solutions for 2 billion people living in resource-constrained settings.
