| Abstract Scope |
The search for sustainable materials has promoted the development of polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers as an alternative to conventional synthetic materials. Among the various lignocellulosic fibers available in Brazil, curauá (Ananas erectifolius), native to the Amazon region, stands out because of its low density, biodegradability, and excellent mechanical performance. This study investigated the mechanical behavior of polyester composites reinforced with 5, 10, and 15 vol% curauá fibers, using the neat polymer as a reference. Tensile and flexural specimens were manufactured according to ASTM D638 and ASTM D790, respectively. The experimental results were statistically evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test. The composite containing 15 vol% fiber exhibited the highest flexural strength (82.60 MPa), while tensile strength increased with fiber content, reaching 56.40 MPa at 15 vol%. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of curauá fibers as reinforcement and highlight their potential for sustainable composite applications. |
