This study investigates the influence of varying Cu additions and unavoidable Fe impurities—typically accumulated during aluminum recycling—on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of AA6061 alloys during hot compression. Three variants (base, high-Fe simulating recycled material, and high-Cu) underwent thermomechanical testing at temperatures ranging from 400 to 500 °C under strain rates of 0.1 and 1.0 s⁻¹. Microstructure and crystallographic texture were characterized using EBSD, SEM-BSE, and TEM to correlate dynamic softening mechanisms and precipitation behaviors with mechanical performance. Results indicate that higher Cu content significantly enhances solid-solution strengthening at 500°C, thereby increasing alloy hardness. Moreover, elevated strain rates yield substantial grain refinement. Furthermore, the high-Fe variant exhibits coarsened secondary phase particles, which effectively promote dynamic recrystallization via particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN). These findings provide critical insights into optimizing thermomechanical parameters in industrial applications of advanced, sustainable AA6061. |
