| Abstract Scope |
Consolidation of Magnesium (Mg) and Mg alloy powders using various processes is challenging primarily due to the presence of surface oxide layers on powder particles. In this work, different methods are used to predict, process towards full density, and subsequently analyze the resultant Mg/Mg alloy powder consolidate. Thermodynamic modeling is applied to analyze powder alloy and small oxygen content effects on phase formation. Direct comparison is made between solid and liquid state atmospheric pressure sintering, and spark plasma sintering towards full density powder consolidation. Additionally, results of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of powders are applied to better understand the powder surface oxide layers and how to disrupt these layer and potentially achieve full density powder consolidation. Through analysis of modeling, sinter processing towards full density, and surface analysis a more quantitative understanding of Mg/Mg alloy powder consolidation can be developed and potentially benefit structural components fabrication for commercial applications. |
