Abstract Scope Materials maturation requires years-long effort and often needs multiple projects for sustainment. As scale-up and scale-out are executed, the investment increases such that, absent an application that will directly gain enhanced performance, we describe the challenge as a valley of death. This presentation argues that computational methods should shorten the process using the prospect of new aluminum alloys for use in additive manufacturing as the exemplar. Materials Maturation Levels are described as an analogue to TRLs as context for what has to be done.
