Symposium Phase Transformations in Ceramics: Science and Applications
Presentation Title From Clay to Capability: Multisensory Exploration of Material Properties and Structural Behavior in Ceramic Learning

Abstract Scope Children with disabilities remain significantly underrepresented in science and technical learning, despite equal capacity for innovation. Since 2007, the Art Ability in Disability Outreaches have used ceramics integrated with indigenous clay practices to engage children with disabilities in STE(A)M learning through multisensory and inclusive design approaches. The program explores the Clay for Play Manual, and the Multisensory Clay4Play Kit, which uses texture, color, and form to teach material science, mathematics, and artistic expression. Over two decades, thousands of children across six Nigerian states have been exposed to material properties, structural stability, firing, and creative problem-solving through partnerships with special schools and disability centers. Documented outcomes include access to fine motor coordination, increased technical knowledge and strengthened social inclusion. This presentation shares methodologies and best practices for ceramics-based STEAM outreach, offering a scalable global model that addresses equity in education while preparing the next generation of ceramics innovators.
