| Abstract Scope |
Harsh reactor conditions drive microstructural changes through the formation of irradiation-induced defects and radiation enhanced migration of solute elements, impurities, and fission products, ultimately degrading the mechanical performance of structural materials. The evaluation of evolving microstructures and mechanical properties of reactor materials exposed to harsh reactor conditions drives the development and qualification of advanced reactor structural materials. This presentation highlights three NSUF-supported studies including one Super Rapid Turnaround Experiment (Super-RTE) awarded during the inaugural Super-RTE funding cycle. Two published studies investigate the influence of solute type on evolving irradiated microstructures and deformation mechanisms in ferritic alloys using nanoindentation and transmission electron microscopy while the Super-RTE study focuses on the impacts of irradiation damage and fission product migration on the mechanical performance of TRISO SiC through scanning electron microscope in situ tensile experiments. Together, these projects demonstrate how NSUF user facilities advance the understanding and development of advanced reactor materials. |
