Abstract Scope |
Lithium scarcity has ignited a pressing need for developing alternative battery chemistries to lithium-ion, such as sodium-ion batteries. Within the battery field, symmetric configurations have drawn significant interest due to their recyclability, safety and reduced volume expansion than their asymmetric counterparts. In this regard, additive manufacturing allows the creation of free-form electrode designs with the ultimate objective to deliver 3D battery shapes that promote ion diffusion in the three dimensions. In this work, different designs of current collector-free Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) electrodes were 3D printed via vat photopolymerization and subsequently thermal post-processed, with the aim of utilizing them as both cathode and anode in a symmetric NVP/NVP sodium-ion battery. Through comprehensive materials characterization, coupled with advanced electrochemical testing, this work shows that a symmetric NVP/NVP battery exhibits competitive specific capacity values and excellent capacity retention, while harnessing the benefits inherent to 3D printing technology. |
