Abstract Scope |
For the efficient production of Mg metal from ferronickel slag via molten salt electrolysis, the solubility and electrochemical behavior of Mg2SiO4 in MgF2 – LiF molten salt at 1053 K were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the solubility of Mg2SiO4 saturated at approximately 0.26 mass% after 5 h. Cyclic voltammetry measurements, conducted using C working electrode, Pt quasi-reference electrode, and C counter electrode, revealed the preferential electro-reduction of silicate ions over that of Mg2+, and Si metal was produced when − 1.35 V (vs. Pt quasi-ref.) was applied for 0.5 h. Moreover, when electrolysis was conducted at 1053 K using C cathode and C anode under − 1.62 V for 14 h, MgO was identified along with Si metal. These results demonstrate that the efficient production of Mg metal from Mg2SiO4 is feasible through the selective electro-reduction of silicate ions, followed by electrolysis of the resulting MgO. |
