| Abstract Scope |
Dimension stones are natural cladding materials widely used in the construction industry due to their high added value and aesthetic appeal. However, their intrinsic porosity promotes liquid absorption and staining, which may compromise durability and performance. In this context, water-repellent treatment has emerged as an alternative to enhance the resistance of these materials under service conditions. This study proposes a new hydrophobic treatment technique for ornamental quartzites, aiming to improve the penetration efficiency of a hydrophobic agent into the porous structure of the stone. Samples of three Brazilian quartzites commonly used in construction applications were immersed in a hydrophobic solution and subjected to different exposure times and positive pressure levels in a pressurized chamber. Compared with the conventional technique currently employed by the industry, the proposed method resulted in a significant increase in the uptake of the hydrophobic agent by the stone substrate. |
