| Abstract Scope |
Supersonic microparticle impact-induced bonding in metals is commonly understood from a continuum mechanics perspective, in which ultrahigh-rate deformation disrupts surface oxides, exposes fresh metallic surfaces, and forces them into intimate contact. Here, we introduce an atomistic perspective on impact-induced bonding and develop a unified framework that connects impact conditions to the formation and strength of metallic interfaces. The framework predicts both the critical bonding velocity and the resulting interfacial bond strength. Its predictions are validated against experimental measurements spanning different metals and impact conditions. This work provides a predictive physical framework for understanding and controlling impact-induced metallic bonding. |
