Abstract Scope |
TiAl6V4 (Ti64) is a popular material for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) due to its printability, high strength-to-weight ratio, and ductility. ASTM F2924 sets composition limits, ensuring additively manufactured products have reliable properties. However, recent results indicate that in-spec composition variation in oxygen, both across suppliers and from reused powder, increases ultimate tensile strength in PBF-LB Ti64. This research studies the effect of oxygen, aluminum, iron, vanadium, and hydrogen on martensite decomposition during post-processing. A yield strength prediction model adapted from literature indicates that solid-solution strengthening due to higher 𝛼-stabilizers is the primary contribution to the observed increase in strength. Experimental and computational results show increasing 𝛼-volume fraction and lath thickness with increased β-stabilizer content, likely as an increase in β-stabilizers allows V to more quickly diffuse to the grain boundaries to nucleate the β-phase, allowing the martensite tempering to progress and the alpha laths to coarsen. |
