| Abstract Scope |
In-situ multimodal synchrotron X-ray characterization, combining phase-contrast tomography (PCT), diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), and scanning 3D X-ray diffraction (S-3DXRD), was applied to study microstructural evolution in the necking region of a tensile-deformed aluminium polycrystal, where voids nucleate and grow. PCT identifies precipitates and voids, DCT maps the undeformed grain structure, and S-3DXRD resolves intragranular orientations and stress states. The data enable assessment of the stress state at void nucleation sites prior to nucleation. Using the initial grain structure as input, finite-element-based crystal plasticity simulations predict the evolution of local grain orientations and stress states, allowing direct comparison with experimental data. Further, far-field stress states around voids predicted by crystal plasticity are used to compare void growth with the continuum-scale Rice-Tracey model. |
