| Abstract Scope |
A criterion to succeed with production of aluminum using inert oxygen-evolving anodes is reduction of the electrolyte temperature to reduce the corrosion/dissolution of the anode material into the electrolyte. When reducing the electrolyte temperature compared to today’s state-of-the-art at around 960 °C, the aluminum oxide solubility will decrease. The choice of electrolyte will hence have to take into consideration the alumina solubility, the corrosion rate of candidate inert anode materials in such electrolytes, the resulting operating electrolyte temperature and the conductivity of the melt. This study investigates the solubility of alumina in Na3AlF6-AlF3-KF-LiF systems, providing data for electrolytes of varying composition at temperatures between 850-950 °C. While the increase of KF in Na3AlF6-AlF3-KF results in higher alumina solubility, the addition of LiF reduces the electrolyte liquidus temperature and increases the ionic conductivity of the melt. An equation for estimating future alumina solubility in similar electrolytes has been developed. |
