| Abstract Scope |
Iron is intentionally added to glass for coloration and UV protection, while it is also incorporated from raw materials. Because the optical properties and crystallization of glasses strongly depend on the valence state of iron, its control during high-temperature reactions is essential. This study investigated the spectrometric analysis of Fe-containing soda-lime-silica glass using a hyperspectral camera as a preliminary step toward in-situ spectroscopic observation of glass reactions at high temperatures. The glass sample was heated above its liquidus temperature in an Ar atmosphere to promote the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, resulting in a change of the glass color. Then the hyperspectral measurements of the reacted sample were carried out and confirmed the change of the absorption spectrum from the original sample due to Fe3+ reduction to Fe2+. The applicability of hyperspectral imaging for in-situ evaluation of spatial variations in iron valence during high-temperature reactions will be discussed. |
