| Abstract Scope |
The synergistic effects of H, He and radiation damage were investigated utilizing high-throughput ion irradiation and materials characterization capabilities across two Nuclear Science User Facilities. Samples of pure nickel were triple-ion irradiated at the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory with 5 MeV Ni2+ to 7.3 dpa at ~1.5×10-4 dpa/s with simultaneous co-injection of energy-degraded 2.85 MeV He2+ and 390 keV H+. Dual-dynamic shutters were utilized to implant 2D gradients of 0, 0.9, 9 or 90 appm/dpa of H/He across 16 unique regions per sample. Experiments were conducted in four distinct irradiation modes: room temperature (RT) irradiation, irradiation at 400°C, RT irradiation + 400°C annealing, and RT irradiation + 400°C irradiation. Post-irradiation examination was then conducted at the Low Activation Materials Development and Analysis Laboratory, including nano-indentation, SEM/EBSD and cross-sectional FIB/TEM. Results show evidence of depth-dependent grain growth behavior tied to helium implantation and correlate nano-hardness measurements to microstructural observations. |
