| Abstract Scope |
The objective of this study is to evaluate the plane strain compression behavior of a zirconium-based alloy as a function of temperature and strain rate to inform thermomechanical processing strategies. Plane strain compression experiments are performed up to a true strain of 1 using a Gleeble 3500 at temperatures between 873 and 1223 K and strain rates from 0.01 to 1 s-1. The resulting flow curves are fit using established constitutive relationships, which are thenleveraged as inputs for the development of a processing map using the Dynamics Material Model framework. The resulting processing map is then used to determine regions of microstructural instability. Post-test materials characterization of the grain structure via electron microscopy methods, as well as crystallographic texture using X-ray diffraction, is then performed to correlate the developed microstructure as a function of testing parameters with processing map predictions of microstructure instability. |
