| Abstract Scope |
Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS) is a non-destructive characterization technique for the measurement of bulk elastic properties of materials. The technique relies on the transmittance of an acoustic wave through the sample which activates resonance modes at specific frequencies that are characteristic of the chemistry, crystal structure and density of the material. The spectrum produced is then used to extract the elastic constants. For nuclear fuels, capturing mechanical property information at elevated temperatures is notoriously difficult. This has led to data gaps, particularly for fuels that are challenging to handle due to their pyrophoricity such as UN. Therefore, there exists motivation to develop high temperature thermomechanical characterization tools. Here, we demonstrate the use of RUS to measure Young’s, Bulk and Shear modulus for various nuclear fuels (UO2, doped UO2 and UN) as well as adaptation of the apparatus resulting in temperature-dependent elastic moduli data up to 1000 °C. |
