Stacking fault energy (SFE) is a critical parameter governing the deformation behavior, phase stability, and mechanical performance of austenitic steels. SFE is strongly influenced by the alloying elements. Thermodynamic approaches, particularly CALPHAD-based models, enable SFE prediction through the evaluation of the Gibbs free-energy difference between face-centered cubic (fcc) austenite and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) martensite, together with interfacial energy contributions. Depending on the magnitude of SFE, deformation may occur through strain-induced martensitic transformation (TRIP) at low SFE, deformation twinning (TWIP) at intermediate SFE, or dislocation glide at high SFE, resulting in diverse strength–ductility combinations. In the present work, the influence of varying carbon contents and other alloying elements (Si, Ni and Cu) on the SFE of austenitic steels is systematically investigated. Furthermore, a user-friendly Python-based computational tool, pySFE, has been developed to calculate SFE and predict the corresponding deformation mechanisms, thereby providing an efficient platform for alloy design and microstructure optimization. |
