Metallic glasses are strongly heterogenous materials. Structurally, this can be captured by considering the co-existence of elastically responding domains, and domains with a strong damping signature. This is well demonstrated via spatially resolved dissipative fluctuations using atomic force microscopy or atomistic modelling. A direct consequence of this heterogeneity is the ability to admit anelastic strains and time-dependent recovery. Here we use nanoindentation to probe the effect of unrecovered anelasticity on shear initiation in a Zr-based metallic glass. Our experiments reveal that the critical load for shear initiation depends on the pre-load conditions and on the waiting time before plastic shear occurs. After sufficiently long waiting times, the critical load for shear initiation returns to the initial value observed without any pre-loading history. We discuss our findings in terms of anelastic recovery, enthalpy recovery, and apparent hardening due to preloading protocols.
