Growing global energy demand has increased interest in hydrogen technologies, where rapid and reliable gas detection is essential for safe operation. This work investigates metallic thin films as hydrogen sensors, exploiting metal-element’s strong affinity for hydrogen absorption. Small additions of metal dopants enable hydrogen-induced changes in physical properties to be monitored, providing a magnetoresistive approach for hydrogen quantification. Thin films were fabricated by magnetron sputtering, followed by SEM-EDS, AFM, and SQUID magnetometry characterization. Electrical magnetoresistance was employed for hydrogen detection. The alloys exhibit Curie temperatures close to room temperature and a measurable magnetoresistance contrast between hydrogen-free and hydrogen-loaded states at ambient pressure. Complementary density functional theory calculations were performed to clarify hydrogen-induced structural and physical changes in bulk and slab configurations, addressing both hydrogen absorption and surface adsorption mechanisms. |
