Operando technologies can provide a straightforward insight to electrochemical processes at different states of charge. Operando XRD has been widely employed for investigating bulk phase revolution of cathode materials while operando Raman technology is more sensitive to the vibration modes of local bonding and then provides further atomic information of electrochemical revolutions. Herein, LiFePO4 and LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 cathodes are systematically compared by operando Raman spectroscopy. LiFePO4 shows relatively abrupt and reversible changes in phosphate vibrational modes, whereas LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 exhibits a continuous ν1 P–O shift from approximately 945 to 982 cm–1, pronounced peak broadening, and weakened spectral reversibility. These features indicate multiple local bonding environments and a solid-solution-like or suppressed two-phase reaction pathway induced by Fe/Mn redox coupling and Mn3+ Jahn–Teller distortion. This work provides mechanistic insight into Mn-substituted olivine cathodes and guides the design of high-energy LiMn1–xFexPO4 materials. |
