Abstract Scope This paper reports on the novel AWE anode consisting of NBRO (Na-doped bismuth ruthenium oxide)-CCS (catalyst coated substrate) which uses nickel, SUS304, or titanium as the substrate. The anodes were prepared by coating and calcination of the precursor, which is metal hydroxide containing Bi, Ru, and Na, on metal substrates. The polarization performance was evaluated by rotating-disk method in 0.1 mol/L KOH solutions by CV, LSV, and PRCE (periodically reverse current electrolysis). The results indicated a low Tafel slope of ca. 30 mV/dec, and OER overpotential was low even in PRCE, although degradation by reverse current is one of the significant issues of nickel-based anodes for AWE. NBRO-CCS has a high potential for AWE anode with ultra-low overpotential and an excellent durability to continuous OER and reverse current. This work was supported by NEDO grants No. JPNP20003 and JPNP25002.
