Abstract Scope Expansion in use and reliance on electronics devices exacerbates demand for critical materials like lanthanides. New approaches to sustainable use/re-use are therefore needed. Herein, a value-based recovery design process through multi-tier distributed recovery model is introduced to circumvent or compliment current linear supply chain. To realize the penetration ability of recovery into different life-cycle steps, however, a modular material recovery and separation pathway needs was created by expanding the mix – de-mixing dichotomy into a multi-dimensional energy landscape that reveals low energy processing pathways. Addressing different energy barriers through synergistically coupled stimuli allows us to utilize simple tools to diverge selective elements into different microsystems within the energy landscape. This translates to a physically separable mixture enabling recovery at point of disposal and rapid integration into a multi-tier supply network. We demonstrate this using hard drives from consumer e-waste.
