Abstract Scope |
We explore the orientation selection problem in alloy dendritic evolution during additive manufacturing using experiments and 2D and 3D phase-field simulations. It is well-known that dendrite orientation results from growth competition between the heat flow direction and preferred crystallographic orientation. The competition between interfacial anisotropy and process anisotropy (thermal gradient and interface velocity) leads to rich morphological diversity of the resulting dendritic structures, including columnar, tilted, and seaweed dendrites. We study the oriented growth of cellular-dendritic arrays and growth competition among favorably- and unfavorably-oriented dendrites as a function of misorientation angle and other relevant control parameters using single crystal, bicrystal, and multigrain setups. We find marked effects on growth direction, primary arm spacing, constitutional undercooling, microsegregation, and secondary phase formation. The results reasonably agree with analytical and experimental measurements. Our findings should be relevant to controlling the structure, segregation, and texture randomization in various commercial dendrite materials relevant to AM. |
