Abstract Scope Most materials science and engineering students are well prepared for industry careers. However, our field is changing quickly as new tools and methods become available, and the skills required for a successful career in the future of materials science are uncertain. How can students and educators prepare for industry careers in light of this uncertainty? I will discuss key skills, outcomes of effective student training, and the characteristics of high performing industry practitioners.
