| Abstract Scope |
The historical evolution of armor materials has been driven by advances in firearms and increasing demands for lightweight personal protection. In this context, lignocellulosic natural fibers have emerged as sustainable alternatives to synthetic reinforcements due to their favorable specific mechanical properties. This work evaluates flax fabric impregnated with PEG-based non-Newtonian fluids containing SiO₂ and B₄C for engineering and ballistic applications. Fluids with 50, 55, 60, and 65 wt.% silica and 5 wt.% boron carbide were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, grammage, thickness, tensile, viscosity, and ballistic tests. FTIR confirmed characteristic functional groups, while XRD indicated flax crystallinity of 60.7% and alpha-quartz silica. Impregnation increased mass and thickness up to 959 g/m² and 1.02 mm. PEG viscosity increased 19-fold with 50 wt.% SiO₂. Ballistic tests showed that 3L-60S and 3L-65S increased absorbed energy by 14%, reaching 17.63 J and 58.79 m/s. |
